Why We No Longer Use arpReach as Auto-Responder

We were using Sendy as an autoresponder when my wife, Britt, found arpReach. She liked the product a lot since it could do things Sendy couldn't (and still can't as far as I know) and which she found very useful. She bought the so-called “Gold” license. According to arpReach, the Gold license gave right to the script for lifetime on five domains.

Since Britt liked the product, she recommended it to other people and, as an affiliate sold several licenses. Enough to earn her $ 225… Or should I say: Enough to earn her $ 225 if arpReach had paid the commission they owed her.

In the meantime, arpReach was sold to Mutual Advantage LTD. This shouldn't impact the commission affiliates had earned, but the representant of Mutual Advantage LTD, Frank, claimed that the previous owners said that they had no outstanding commissions, and he said he couldn't pay Britt what she should have received.

Frank was a nice guy, Britt told me. And he was really sorry about all that and he said that they will honor her commission on her coming sales if she kept on promoting arpReach and that he would try to give her a bit more each time so she would make her $225 back over time.

To be honest, I didn't like it one bit. Firstly, I don't see why they didn't pay the affiliates, all the affiliates, especially when they could document, like Britt did, that they actually sold the product. I mean, if you buy a company, whatever company it is, you certainly have to honor the debt or invoice this company has running. You just don't say to creditors: “Sorry, chaps! New owners! Tough luck! We won't pay you!”

If, for some reason, it was impossible (which I doubt!), I don't see why Frank, who was such a nice person according to Britt, didn't give lifetime upgrades for free or something like that as compensation. That wouldn't have cost him anything and it would have made everyone happy.

But Britt thought Frank was a nice guy and that we should keep on doing business with them.

If you check out arpReach on the net, you will see that many people complain about bugs and especially that these aren't fixed. But that was about to change since they were bought up.

Some time ago (months…) Facebook made some changes which meant that you couldn't post a copy of your mail automatically from arpReach to your Facebook account. “This will be fixed in the next version of the product”, Frank said. Three versions later, the bug is still there and it still doesn't work… But we have a new nice interface and the possibility to be “Arpverified”, which is a new (paid, of course!) product to “verify your email”.

And since the script is encoded, you cannot fix the PHP yourself.

We found another serious bug in segmentations. When told about this, Frank sent it to the programmers so this bug could be fixed. Needless to say that this bug isn't fixed either… But we have a new nice interface and the possibility to be “Arpverified”, which is… Oh… Sorry. Did I tell you that already?

Since I was making some instructional videos in French about how to setup arpReach and how to use it. I asked Frank (since Britt told me he was a nice guy), if I could have an extra license for a few months to install arpReach on a test-site and make the videos. I didn't want to use my own because I wasn't fond of showing everyone my lists, e-mail-addresses, etc. So it was just for a few months, the time to make the videos and to show everything from how to install, to setup, write mails… Everything (I didn't do anything about Arpverified, though!)

Then strange things began to happen.

First: The Gold license is now not for 5 sites anymore, but for 3. Needless to say that the price didn't go down accordingly. But there is often a very good offer “Save -> this week”, where you can get arpReach for a cheaper price. No need to hurry, though. “This week” is so to speak any week. Note that you can still upgrade to “the old” licence by getting an upgrade to five licence. Remember that, it will be important later on.

Second: arpReach stays adware, whatever amount you pay. You will always have a “Powered by arpReach” at the bottom of everyone of your mails.

Third: Licenses are not really lifetime licenses. Yes, of course, you might have the product on your page forever, but if you need to download your product again (for example if you move from one host to another) then you are stuck! After the “upgrade and support” time expires, you can't even download the product you bought. If you want to download the product you bought two years ago, you'll have to pay for “upgrade and support”. Very special understanding of what “lifetime” means, it seems.

Fourth: Now that we speak about renewing the licence it is time to remember what I wrote under “first”. When you need to renew your lifetime licence, you can renew three licences for $ 120. Three? What about if you have their upgrade with five licences? Will they give you the two extra for free or make a “special offer for you only”? To be honest, I wouldn't be able to check it out. Their last “update” was in December 2015. It was back then they gave the possibility to be Arpverified which is a new… Sorry! Couldn't resist.

Fifth: For some obscure reason (maybe because their script is too old), you can add a domain, but you cannot remove it yourself. You get five licenses… Sorry, three, but you can upgrade to five… You can only renew three, though… Er… This is getting complicated… For the sake of argument, let's say you have a new Gold-licence which gives you the right to three licences. You install arpReach on a site and then it will ask you for a key. You make the key through the user interface on arpReach's site. In this case, you will be able to make up to three keys.

Britt had arpReach on a domain she let go and that didn't own anymore.

If you change your mind or let a domain go or whatever, like it was the case for Britt, you might want to remove the domain from the list to “free up” the licence so it can be used for another domain.

Well, you can't do that! You have to ask arpReach to remove it for you. This is already bothering, but it doesn't stop there. ArpReach takes a fee of $35 to remove the key from their database.

Here comes the funny part. You remember the licence Frank borrowed to me, so I could make the instruction-videos? Well, it all started with me writing to Frank, telling him that the videos were finished and that I didn't need the extra-licence and telling him he could now remove it. They actually asked me $35 to remove it too!

I got pretty mad. When I answered that this was actually the drop, then Frank explained to me that I should be very glad that he went through the difficulties of borrowing one extra licence to me at no cost so I could make hours of video with a free promotion of their product. In short, I was just bloody ungrateful!

Then Frank went on and on with about that when we pay for 3 license, we shouldn't have six (or five) and that we weren't entitled to have more licenses that we paid for and so on, I never really understood what he meant and after trying for a couple of days I gave up. I finished by writing a mail in very simple English. When I sent this mail, I had tried to make him understand what was happening through several days and five or six mails:

Believe me if you want, but whilst there has been a crack of light somewhere, he seemed only to understand part of it.

1. You would like us to remove the domain malka.link from your account because that is the license you borrowed from us to make nice videos.

By that time, I had given up a while ago and had decided to write this article.

So in short:

– arpReach cheats us for our affiliate money. They tell us that they will find a way to give us this money little by little over time. Britt earned more affiliate money afterwards and of course, there was not a dime more than what was earned (but Frank is quite proud that they actually did pay what they owed this time!). Britt never had any form for compensation whatsoever.

– They don't fix the bugs, the latest “update” is merely a way to try to squeeze more money from us with “Arpverify”.

– You can't download your product again after a while.

– You can't remove old license-domains unless you pay extra.

Personally, I do not recommend arpReach anymore. There's no way I will pull new users through THAT.

… So if anyone needs a set of videos in French about how to use this product…

    Everything written here sums up my own experience with Arpreach.

    Since they got bought by Mutual DISadvantage, they turned it into a cheating venture.

    Blocked my account and knocked me off for no good reason.

    I suggest and advice EVERYONE never to use Arpreach

      What happened since they knocked you off? And the license you bought from them, it’s null and void now? Can they do that? Well, obviously they can, but is it legal?

  2. I am sorry you had such a bad experience with them. I was hoping the new ownership would turn things around. Sounds like it is worse. A bloody shame because the concept looks so promising. What are you using to capture emails now? I don’t like anything I see out there. I am still looking…

      It’s kind of geeky, but does everything I want it to do. I spent a lot of time searching, and although I often wish it was easier to mail one list and not those with a specific tag (buyers of that product I’m promoting) then I still think it’s the best I’ve seen.

  3. Well, software development needs man power, even to maintain it and improve it to further version of, for example, php 7 – so yes, reasonable to have a new licensing model.

    The Powered by can be easily turned off, so it is fully white-labeled.

    A lot of bugs have yet been improved.

    The 35.- bucks is just for a domain change.

    The five (or more) licenses are all renewed with the yearly payment of 120.- even as told to be only for three domains. You can leave as is if you want to keep your current php version (actual php 5.6) without paying again. You can keep a copy of installation script on your local machine for years, and that will work.

    Not knowing why arpreach schould kill your account – except you are doing things against their tos, for instance selling additional licenses you have but do not need (if you have more than one, they are only for your own use).

    So to sum up: I am using arpreach now for a very long time I think it is one of the best solutions- and the new ownership made things even better.

    They maintain the software as never before – nevertheless: software development costs time and money, and so Mutual Advantage did the right steps to keep it running for a very very long time.

    1. ARPReach has become crap. I am one of the first customers of arplus and got the lifetime option to arpreach for a one tme fee.

      It is BS now people have to pay for updates, they loose licences they had because of the new owner. If I had known this sooner I would have gotten me legal support.

      It is not even Legit to just say “I took it over and we drop all promises made”.

      Now there is a arpreach v2 you have to pay almost 1000usd for, because the first version is barely supported.

      This company can not be trusted, so stop making excuses for them.

  4. Arp Reach has bulked up my contact list with fake contacts, inflating my numbers and leaving me with angry users on my list claiming I’m a spammer. Disgusted by this service to be honest.

  5. Some remarks from an active arpreach user:
    Commissions: The old owner of arpreach owed me commissions as well. After months of reminders and threatening that I would make the issue public, I got paid. Please note: This was NOT under mutual advantage new ownership but the original developer.
    When I bought arpreach it was possible to change domain names as long as you would use the software on the number of domains licensed.
    The new owner does not allow that.
    Chris: It is European Right that you are allowed to sell single licenses if you own them. A software company can’t exclude this right in TOS or EULA.
    If mutual advantage does not allow transfer of licenses in their terms and conditions, it might be against the law.
    As older customers bought under the assumption that they could move their software to new domains as long as the number of active domains would not exceed the number of active licenses, I feel treated unfairly by mutual advantage.
    That’s why I have now stopped recommending arpreach to customers.
    The product itself is great, but the new owner should treat his old customers properly.
    What’s next?
    A new version is about to come out.
    Will the update be free for lifetime update license owners ?

    1. Hi arpreach user, thank you for your remarks. I’m glad you got paid. I didn’t have the old owners contact data, and the new owners didn’t offer them. And yes, they changed the conditions for people who bought before they took over, which is why we had enough in the end.

      We use MailWizz now – http://malka.im/mailwizz – and it can do everything we want it to, and it’s waaaay cheaper. The developer is a nice guy who’s very helpful.

      Ironic that they call their company “mutual advantage”, right?

    They break the agreement between me (and others buyers like me), I bought the software because of lifetime upgrade, the price is very expensive compare to other software, but because of they offer me lifetime upgrade so I was decided to purchase it BUT they ask me to pay a lot of money for upgrade now 🙁

    I’m Kevin Polley, as many of you are aware I have been improving arpReach since I bought the code rights back in 2015.

    I’m writing to let you know about changes that affect you and to let you know why these changes have to be made.

    Background:

    Hopefully you all know that I have been a ‘lifelong’ user of ‘ARP’ and I know some of you have been as well.

    Original purchasers, which included me, were offered a ‘free update’ to arpReach from ARP3 by the original owner. Some of his customers who ordered during the later part of ARP3 development were given the opportunity to make a one-off payment for ‘lifetime’ support and updates. As it turned out we didn’t get the improvements we expected, bug fixes were slow and eventually stopped being released, not that arpReach wasn’t a very solid product to start with or didn’t work.

    Being a long time customer of the original developer I reached out to him for some clarification on his plans at the end of 2014. I really didn’t want to go through the pain of finding and learning a new ‘core software tool’ for my business, or having one written from scratch. I wanted to know, was there a future for this self-hosted software that is core to my business.

    This resulted in me buying the rights to the code in February 2015.

    Since then I’ve been introducing improvements, fixing bugs and providing support to the original users. Now three years on and for various reasons I have to remind you and clarify that your ‘lifetime’ agreement with the previous owner ceased the day I bought the code. But it’s not doom and gloom, far from it.

    The future:

    There is a very bright future for the software and those of us who use it.

    The original 1.x version will continue to work but no new features or improvements are planned, although bug fixes may be applied from time to time. In fact, one will be release within the next week or so.

    The new #V2 version that works with PHP7 has been in development for sometime. It includes new features and improvements and more are planned which I’m very excited about. Please keep an eye out for details of the #V2 pilot in the coming weeks.

    The changes that affets you now:

    1) Your original 1.x version allows you to use the version you already have installed without time limit – this will not change.
    2) Your access to future 1.x updates and support without time limit has changed.
    – Your access for 1.x updates and support has been set to April 4th 2018
    – If you would like further 1.x updates and or support you will need a current upgrades and support plan. The Renew Now facility at https://www.arpreach.com/renew will add 12 months access to your current expiry date and cost $120.
    3) The $120 you spend on your 1.x upgrades and support plan can be deducted from the cost of a new #V2 license when they go on sale.
    – For a limited time #V2 will be available as a self-hosted solution. Keep an eye out for details of the #V2 pilot.

    Why have I had to do this now:

    Apart from changes to the way my business needs to store and use data a small minority has spolit things for all.
    Those reasons include:
    Some people publishing false and misleading content telling people to avoid arpReach.
    Some have stolen arpReach by hacking it and then selling it.
    Some even illegally resold their domain license allocation and then had thier customers using my support services.

    This has all led to a decline in sales and renewals that made it increasingly difficult to fund the improvements I hoped I would be able to make. Put simply I see no alternative but to ‘start again’ to protect and secure future development of the software and offer high quality support to my customers.

    I’d like to thank those of you who have been in touch over the last couple of months. Discovering how you use the software, how important it is in your business and what you’d like to see and how you can order it in the future has been a big help. I’m really looking forward to working with the silent majority of die-hard ‘ARP’ users and advocates in the coming years.

      According to Kevin Polley’s email, sales have declined because of outside activities. It’s not their fault but the others’.

      Could be. It could also be the high price or the lack of bug fixes earlier (I don’t know how it is now, since I’m not using it). Or it could be that they once again say, “We didn’t make those promises. The previous owner did.” This might be perfectly legal, I have no idea. But I can see how it’s not pleasant to be at the receiving end of that message.

  7. What a sad case, and I fully agree. ArpReach is dealing in a way that gives internet marketing a bad reputation indeed.
    An agreement IS an agreement, and I get so angry when people don’t live up to agreements… Certainly a good thing that you speak out so none of the customers who might have bought through your affiliate links would think badly of you.

    1. I would think that an agreement is an agreement, yes. Even if it should legally be fine to nullify such an agreement, I still think it’s nasty behavior.

  8. They just rip off everybody, I bought arpreach because off the lifetime update but they cut it off, the agreement should be the agreement, the new owner know it and try to make money from all the owners (users), they cut the upgrade and ask for money.

      I had and have the same. I had a lifetime license for 23 domains because I was one of the first doing the upgrade.

      All is gone and they just scam you for more money. Time to move on and setup something else.

  9. arpReach is still being improved. It could have been improved quicker had it not been for the damage your lies in this post caused. #V2 was released.

    BTW It’s about time you removed this post which is out of date, full of lies and full of inaccuracies … or better still, provide your address so the owner of arpReach so he can take action against you. I don’t think you will because you know the truth shows you to be liars and not as honest as you try to make out.

    1. If you accuse somebody of writing lies and to be liars, the least you could do was to provide some proof. And if you blame a personally owned blog with an Alexa ranking of something in the neighborhood of 4 million for damaging your business, then I really wouldn’t want to buy shares in anything you touch.

      This post will never get out of date. It’s a snapshot of what made us stop using and stop promoting arpReach. Those facts will always stand.

      And we seem to be far from alone in having this opinion. Look at all the comments this blog post has gotten. Mostly unhappy buyers. But as you can see from the fan boy comment I just replied to (he wrote shortly after you, but I only saw your comments today), I don’t censor comments just because people disagree with me. I’m not a cult leader. I allow people to have an opinion of their own. People are free to post good as well as bad experiences with you here on my blog.

      You need only do a search on Quora.com and WarriorForum.com to see what people think about arpReach. Are you bullying them in the same way with blog comments, threats and emails?

    I feel kind of ripped off by the old developer as well.
    But I’d never blame the new owner for that.

    Think about it:

    You promoted the business of the original developer.
    That old developer cashed in your sales and he promised you commissions.
    The old developer kept your affiliate money and earned money from your efforts.

    Did I get this right?

    Why do you expect the new developer to pay?

    If the old guy promised you commissions and lifetime support, go find him and get the old guy to provide what he promised!
    If he refuses to stick to the rules of your contract, go sue him!
    Welcome to the world of business. That’s what laws and judges are for.

    Please don’t play the fool by blaming the new developer for sins of the old developer.

    That’s plain nonsense.

    By the way:
    Keep using the current version as it’s great! 10 times better than the old arpReach version before the new guy took over.

    The new developers really did a great job.

    The old developer promised a lot, but that’s not the responsibility of the new guy, who only bought rights to a software. And he did a great job fixing all the bugs and introducing stunning new features.

    Even if you hate this fact: He did not inherit any obligations of the old developer.

    I will continue to use arpReach.
    And currently I consider purchasing V2.

    And by the way: I feel a little ripped off by the original developer as well. But I sleep well, as my current arpReach is a wonderful piece of software that earns me money every day.

      Why do I hold them responsible? Because that’s ethics. Probably the law, too. And when you buy a company, it’s your responsibility to find out if the old one had obligations. Just as when you buy a house, it’s the new owner’s responsibility to pay for obligations the old owner made, unless it’s stipulated in the contract.

      Nobody is supposed to be ignorant in the eyes of the law.

      When the supermarket chain I worked in back in 1982 was sold to another owner, we still got paid the salary we’d worked for. It would have been illegal if the new owners just cancelled our contracts, gave us a lower salary in the future and completely skipped the month’s pay we were earned.

    But not only: MA says now that they don’t want affiliates, they do not have an affiliate programme, ed infact it costs.

    I would like to know if the market is so difficolt for MA, why Interspire has a similar product which costs nearly 100 dollars more and have an affiliate programme which pays out the 50%?

    They also told me that instead of having an affiliation programme the would open a page for me, but not for a long time! They say that they prefer me to buy 10 license at the prize of 150 dollars each, but anyway I had to buy minimum ten licenses at time.
    I’m going to buy Interspire Email Marketer, one license is 495 dollars, but they have affiliation programme and the payout is 50%.

    Then I will compare the two softwares in Comparyson.com, obviosly in favour of Email Marketer.

    Fancy that I have been using and selling arp3-arpReach since 2007, and now all my marketing efforts are destroyed by a farmer.

      What makes you trust Interspire? It’s rather expensive, and I searched every link on their site and couldn’t find out who’s behind it. That’s a red flag to me.

      I would not recommend that you make a dishonest review. If arpReach is better, then it’s better. If Email Marketer (made by whom?) is better, then yes, then it’s better. But don’t allow affiliate commissions to color your reviews. You need to earn people’s trust by being completely honest.

        I have been knowing autoresponder software since 2001, I had all the software of the market since that year, figurout that I have bought one of the first version of Email Marketer in 2005, but I have asked to get back refund. And in 2007 I bought arp3, the old arpReach, which was the best at that time, but also thanks to that great person who was Neil Morgan. Now Email Marketer is a product completely different! I have been working with arpReach since 2007. They now don’t have an affiliation programme. Email Marketer has an affiliation programme, but costs 495 dollars, one hundred more than arpReach. The difference is simple. Email Marketer costs only that for ever. While arpReach costs less, but every year you have to pay 120 dollars to upgrade. Be in my shoes: if someone costs more but gives you the 50% of commission, and someoneelse costs less, but gives you the 25% of commission, telling that on every year of update of 120 dollars, the affiliate won’t receive any commission, whom would you prefer? It’s easy. On the other side now I got both the softwares, arpReach is more simple and easier in installation and use, Email Marketer is so complicated, but if you face problem they install for you gratisly, while with arpReach you have to pay for the installation. But it is not only that, ok Email Marketer is more complicated, but has a number of functions that are double respect to arpReach. But these are not the main problem. The truth is that Neil Morgan, the old owner of arpReach, was a real gentleman, while I have been asked a lot of money, just at the beginning of COVID-19, which demaged my land and me at the beginning of march 2020, so that in four days my land in the north of Italy, has been decleared to stop going around by car and by foot, a red zone, so that until now Italy has become a depressed area, since those days. And now in Great Britain the prime minister Johnson has been declared in a good state from corona virus, but at this time there are in Great Britain a lot of dead people. Corona virus is giving a lot of economic problems everywhere in the world, but in Italy the government, oppressed by Bruxelles, can’t give money to italian firms and workers, while I know that in Great Britain they give to firm a credit for 25.000 euros, to give back with not so much hurry, but they give also 15.000 euros that can be defined lost fund. So who was bad 1 month and an half with me, now got the same problem so he can understand what I suffered just because of corona virus, which stopped at all my work, and obliged me to stay in my bad because there were no place in the hospitals. If that person was different I could understand at all his actual problems, so both we could help each other in some way. But remember that in commerce business is made between persons and it is not made with products, and remember also that the bad you give always come back! Email Marketer is made by Interspire, an australian big firm, which has a big office also in the USA, do not remember exactly where, but if you search on the internet you will find all that information. Any way, despite the treatment received, I will make a review on both the softwares, as it is my traditional work on the internet from 2001, on honest and object base.

          Stay safe there in Italy. I looked up your city because I thought I’d seen the name before. And I was right. I almost grew up in Lazise at the southern end of Lago di Garda, not far from where you are.

          I think you made a wise decision to compare the two products. And DO include service and lack of it.

          You should also check out Nuevo Mailer – https://malka.im/nvm – it costs only a fraction of the price, but seems to cover all but one or two of the points that Email Marketer does.   13. Time are changed and Kevin Polley is doing right, and I’m going to buy the last two renews. It will be a very big challenge on my website, seeing two race horses, fighting one against the other.
